Elizabeth Lane (Barbara Stanwyck) is a food critic for a magazine who has created a deceptive shield of lies, portraying herself as the perfect housewife. When her boss, Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet), invites himself and a sailor, Jefferson Jones (Dennis Morgan), over for a traditional Christmas dinner, Elizabeth has to create the fantasy world she has started or risk losing her job.
