description:

9 to 5 is a 1980 American comedy film starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Dabney Coleman. The film concerns three working women living out their fantasy of getting even with, and their successful overthrow of, the company's autocratic, "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss. 9 to 5 was a hit, grossing over $3.9 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and is the 20th highest-grossing comedy film. As a star vehicle for singer Parton, it launched her permanently into mainstream popular culture. Although a television series based on the film was less successful, a musical version of the film (also titled 9 to 5), with new songs written by Parton, opened on Broadway on April 30, 2009. 9 to 5 is number 47 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies"[citation needed] and is rated "88% fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes.

plot:

Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), a housewife whose husband has left her for his secretary, begins her own secretarial career at Consolidated Companies, a very large corporation. Violet Newstead (Lily Tomlin), a feisty, widowed veteran office manager, instructs her on the perils and procedures of office life – and of working for Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman), their sleazy, chauvinistic boss, and his right-hand woman, the crisp, nosy Roz (Elizabeth Wilson). Meanwhile, Hart's endless attempts to seduce his happily married secretary, Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton), lead the entire office to think she's a "dime-store floozy." When Hart unfairly passes Violet over for a promotion, she drowns her sorrows at a local bar with Judy and Doralee, who regales the others with tales of Hart's epic advances. Later, the three women concoct revenge fantasies about killing their boss, each of which involves the women turning the tables on Hart and humiliating him before his demise. Violet's fantasy is a fairy-tale parody in which Violet, dressed as Snow White, provides Hart with poisoned coffee. The following day, after a mix-up leads the women to think they have accidentally poisoned Hart's coffee, they hatch a scheme to protect themselves by stealing what they believe to be Hart's body from the hospital morgue, having run-ins with car accidents, policemen, and hospital staff in the process. When he turns up alive the next morning, never having drunk the coffee from the previous day, Violet, Doralee and Judy vow to forget the night's troubles, but Roz, considered by almost everyone to be the office snitch, secretly overhears them in the ladies' room and blabs it to Hart. To prevent Hart calling for their arrest, the ladies kidnap him, holding him hostage in his own home. The women then use the occasion of their boss's absence to effect numerous changes around the office as they attempt to hide the true reason for his disappearance from Roz and the other workers. When Hart's wife returns from vacation early, the ladies' plan appears to fail and Hart escapes back to the office. Before the women are ultimately caught, the company's chairman of the board arrives, having been impressed by the increase in efficiency due to the changes the three women put in place. Assuming Hart is responsible for the increased productivity, the chairman of the board asks Hart to move to Brazil to work at the company's local operation. In the end, Violet gets promoted to Hart's job, Judy falls in love and marries a Xerox representative, Doralee quits her job to become a country singer, and Hart is abducted by an Amazon tribe, never to be heard from again.
